VII is a celebration of life, community, and movement. As a result of the Pandemic, I struggled with anxiety and have been working hard to see myself through it. I have finally come to a place where I am feeling more like myself, and I wanted to create a piece to reflect the newfound happiness, strength, and confidence I have recently discovered. VII is a pivotal moment in my artistic journey; I challenged myself to work with a large group of dancers and a musical style that I have never worked with. Dance has been my salvation, and I wanted to share my love for choreography with others.

In Retrospect

In Retrospect​ examines the way we joyfully look back on and, often painfully, let go of previous stages in our lives. It explores the nostalgic feeling of looking back on our past and coming to terms with the permanence of change. As we enter into new stages of our lives, the uncertainty that lies ahead feels daunting and lonely. Along with grieving the loss of past experiences and relationships, we can carry our memories with us to give us strength for what is to come. 
Bolero

Bolero, inspired by Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero,” uses movement to express the dynamics and textures within the music. Within the music, there are multiple instruments that display different sounds and rhythms, and this dance investigates how an individual can express music through her own instrument, through her body. The movement connects directly to the intricate rhythms and patterns in the music.
Bloom

Spring is a time for new beginnings and growth. Bloom investigates the concept of restarting and focusing on the important factors in life. Inspired by the environment, the movement and music in Bloom express the fresh and unique qualities of the spring atmosphere, using light and airy textures. Throughout this past year, everything has been on hold. However, as things start to look brighter, Bloom represents the new beginnings that are about to occur and the optimism associated with it.Choreoraphed as part of the DM. Wait & See

Time is something that should be continuous, but why do we sometimes feel trapped? Wait & See investigates the concept of being stuck in time as represented in museums. Each exhibit in a museum is preserved in their original form; however, time is continuing around them, so what happens when they escape from this form? Are they able to interact with one another and adapt to their surroundings? In the dance, these exhibits come to life and encounter one another before they are forced to return to their positions when they are stuck in time. ​

Virta

Virta was inspired by the music, "Vaihtovirta" by Pan Sonic, which means alternating current. While investigating the rhythm, timing, and dynamics of the movement, Virta, meaning power and current, represents the connection between two people and the energies that they create. When one person moves, it affects the other, and there is a balance within their relationship. The dancers each incorporate a different rhythmical element into their dancing: one dancing with the staccato accents in the music and the other with the more sustained melodies. This contrast in movement displays the dynamics in relationships and how each individual contributes to the alternating current that creates a bond between the two dancers.
If/Then

If/Then examines the inner workings of decision making. From merely simple to the most challenging decisions, the brain is constantly forming “if then” statements. The music, “Our Reflection,” by Max Richter, contains contrasting rhythms throughout the song that are represented through movement between the two groups in the piece. Each group’s movement qualities reflect the speed, rhythm, and dynamics featured in the music. When they come together in the partnering work, the duets are able to explore how working together and supporting each other helps when making a decision. The ability for the two groups to come together, and dance as one, with stronger more powerful movements, signifies how when people work together a greater good can be created.​Performed by Calista Allen, Kenzie Ginter, Olivia Kleven, Chelsea McNamara, Leah Suskind, and Finleigh Zack 
Heal

When I first heard the song, Heal by Tom O'Dell, I was really moved. It made me think that people seem to always be healing from something - a relationship gone wrong, death of a loved one or even addiction.  It is the relationships we build around us that support us in our time of need.  Through movement and partnership, this dance explores the process of healing and the importance of our friends and family coming together to help make us stronger.
Illuminate

​ The title, Illuminate, ​comes from the song, “Luminous”, by Max Richter but it was also influenced by a recent anti-semitic hate crime at a middle school. The victim of the bullying incident chose to bring awareness to the issue of bullying and the hostility in the middle school by speaking out. By choosing to be an up-stander and “illuminating” the ​hatred​ epidemic in his middle school, he has inspired the local community, the administration in the town’s school system, and the other students.
